Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ψχέντ.

Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ψχέντ < Egyptian Demotic p-skhnt < p the + skhnt (representing Hieroglyphic sekhemti the double crown of Egypt). Compare French pschent (1822, used by J. F. Champollion in his publication of the Rosetta stone).The word came into use through the discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1798; in this, line 9 of the Egyptian text has a hieroglyph read sekhemti, line 26 of the Demotic text has p-skhnt, and line 44 of the Greek text has ψχέντ.

Ancient History.

A headdress of ancient Egypt, combining the white crown of Upper Egypt with the red crown of Lower Egypt, used after the formation of the State (c 3000 b.c.).
