Etymology: < ancient Greek ψῆϕος pebble, round stone (see psepho- comb. form) + -ite suffix¹, after French psêfite (A. Brongniart 1813, in Jrnl. des mines 34 46, where he used the term in the more restricted sense ‘an argillaceous rock containing fragments of various schists’). N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (psī·fəit, sī·fəit) /ˈpsiːfaɪt/, /ˈsiːfaɪt/.

Geology.

A coarse-grained breccia, conglomerate, or similar sedimentary rock; (in later use) spec. such a rock after metamorphic alteration. Cf. rudite n.
