Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French adamantin (French adamantin ) of or resembling adamant or diamond (13th cent. in Anglo-Norman; also 16th cent. in figurative use of the heart) and its etymon classical Latin adamantinus of or resembling adamant (especially as typifying hardness) or diamond < ancient Greek ἀδαμάντινος of steel, hard as adamant < ἀδαμάντ- , ἀδάμας adamant n. + -ινος -ine suffix2. Compare ( < Latin) Old High German adamantīn, also (with suffix substitution) adamantisk.In adamantines stan (see sense A.), after post-classical Latin lapis adamantinus (4th or 5th cent. in Jerome), with the adjective being mistaken for a noun in apposition to lapis, and so translated as adamantine's stone, i.e. stone of adamantine.
