Etymology: < pure v. + -ed suffix1. With sense A. 1 compare post-classical Latin puratus (of fur) trimmed (1365, 1382 in British sources), made of trimmed fur (1314, 1329 in British sources), Anglo-Norman puré (adjective) in the same sense (see purray n.). With use as noun compare purray n.With use as noun compare the following earlier example, although it is unclear whether this is to be interpreted as showing the Anglo-Norman or the Middle English word:1384–5 in Dugdale's Monasticon Anglicanum (1830) VI. 1366 Unum mantellum..furroto cum puyred.
