单词 putrification
释义

putrificationn.

Brit. /ˌpjuːtrᵻfᵻˈkeɪʃn/, U.S. /ˌpjutrəfəˈkeɪʃ(ə)n/
Forms: 1500s– putrification, 1600s– putrefication (now nonstandard).
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin putrificat- , putrificare , -ion suffix1.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin putrificat-, past participial stem of putrificare to cause to rot (1381 in a British source; < putrificus causing decay (a1540 (although this is apparently first attested later); < classical Latin puter (also putris ) rotten (see putrid adj.) + -ficus -fic suffix); compare classical Latin putrefacere putrefact v.) + -ion suffix1. Compare Middle French putrification (1555 in an apparently isolated attestation), Spanish putrificación (first half of the 15th cent. as putrificaçion , now rare). Compare earlier putrefaction n.
= putrefaction n. 1.
