Etymology: Either an inferred singular of pillisies, double plural form of pulley n.1 (attested late 17th cent. in a Scottish text), or a variant of pulley sheave n. at pulley n.1 Compounds 2 (with loss of intervocalic -v- : compare pree v.).Compare also the different inferred singular pillies, apparently arising from the same double plural form:1661 Stirling Common Good 5v For a pillies to the counsell house bell.

Originally: †a pulley (obsolete). In later use: an apparatus consisting of a pole with a pulley and rope attached, used to hang clothes out of a window to dry. Cf. pulley n.1 4.
