Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin pulmōn- , pulmō , -o- connective.
Etymology: < classical Latin pulmōn-, pulmō lung (see pulme n.) + -o- connective, partly as alteration of pulmo- comb. form after the Latin oblique stem. Compare pulmoni- comb. form.Found in a small number of formations (most of which have parallels in pulmo- comb. form) from the first half of the 19th cent. (apparently earliest in pulmonobranchous adj.). Combining with second elements ultimately of Greek and Latin origin.
