单词 pulsidge
释义

pulsidgen.

Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: pulse n.2
Etymology: Humorous alteration of pulse n.2; perhaps compare -age suffix. An early allusion to Cockney pronunciation of final /s/ and /z/ as // has been suggested (compare W. Matthews Cockney Past and Present (1938) 11, H. Kökeritz Shakespeare's Pronunciation (1953) 318), as the speaker in quot. 1600 is the character Mrs. Quickly. This theory implies that the form represents a plural (i.e. standard pulses ). However, this seems very unlikely: the syntactic context in quot. 1600 suggests that the word is probably in the singular; moreover, while evidence can be found for this phonetic change affecting final /s/ in verb and noun stems, it does not seem to affect inflectional endings.
Obsolete.
Humorous blunder for pulse n.2Apparently an isolated use.
