1. A throw or blow that hurls a person or animal head first; a heavy fall, a ‘cropper’. Also figurative: a sudden dramatic misfortune or failure. Cf. purl n.5 to come (also go) a purler: to fall heavily head first; (figurative) to suffer sudden misfortune or failure.
