Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: purpense v., -ed suffix1.
Etymology: < purpense v. (although this is first attested slightly later) + -ed suffix1, after Anglo-Norman purpensé premeditated (mid 12th cent. in this sense (see quot. c1150 below), frequently in legal use; c1100 as purpenset in Old French in sense ‘intent on (a thing)’). Compare later prepensed adj., prepense adj.With purpensedly adv. compare earlier purpensely adv. In malice purpensed, purpensed malice after Anglo-Norman malice purpensée (see malice n.). Compare the following early example of Anglo-Norman purpensé:c1150 Laws of William I in F. Liebermann Gesetze der Angelsachsen (1903) I. 492 Autresi..de agwait purpensé [1623 purpensed, 1684 prepensed].
