Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French putaigne, putain.
Etymology: Originally < Anglo-Norman putaigne, puteine, Anglo-Norman and Middle French putain, putein, Middle French putayne , putaine (c1130; French putain ), variant (originally the oblique case form) of pute pute n. In later use reborrowed < French putain. Compare Old Occitan putan (12th or 13th cent.), Catalan putana (13th or 14th cent.), Spanish putana (second half of the 14th cent.), Italian puttana (13th cent.; probably < French). Compare fiz a putain at Fitz n. a.
