Etymology: < post-classical Latin putatitius supposed, imaginary (16th cent.; < classical Latin putāt- , past participial stem of putāre to think (see putation n.) + -ītius : see -itious suffix1) + -ous suffix. Compare earlier putative adj. and slightly earlier putation n. 2.
