Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pūtidus.
Etymology: < classical Latin pūtidus rotten, decaying, stinking, foul, base < pūtēre to stink (see putor n.) + -idus -id suffix1. Compare earlier putrid adj.In some instances perhaps a misspelling or typographical error for putrid adj.
