Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin putrefact-, putrefacere.
Etymology: < classical Latin putrefact-, past participial stem of putrefacere to cause to rot or decay < putrēre to be rotten (see putrid adj.) + facere to make (see fact n.). Compare earlier putrefacted adj., putrefy v.Compare slightly earlier use of putrefact as adjective ( < classical Latin putrefactus, past participle of putrefacere): 1583 P. Barrough Methode of Phisicke iii. xxiii. 110 Neither haue they colour also nor thickenesse, but are like putrifact bloud which is curded.
