Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French pulville; Latin pulvillus.
Etymology: < Middle French pulville pledget (1314 in Old French in a medical context) and its etymon classical Latin pulvillus small cushion, in post-classical Latin also pledget (a1350 in a British source; 1363 in Chauliac), in scientific Latin also in entomological use (1814 or earlier) < pulvīnus cushion (see pulvinus n.) + -ulus -ulus suffix. Compare Old Occitan pulvil, polvilh pledget (both forms 14th cent. in apparently isolated attestations).
1. Chiefly Surgery. A small wad of lint or other soft material, sometimes medicated or scented, used esp. for plugging wounds; a pledget. Obsolete.
