单词 adamish
释义

Adamishadj.1

Brit. /ˈadəmɪʃ/, U.S. /ˈædəmɪʃ/
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Adam , -ish suffix1.
Etymology: < the name of Adam (see Adam n.1) + -ish suffix1. Compare earlier old Adamish adj. at old Adam n. Derivatives. The quotation below may be evidence of Adamish rather than old Adamish , but the later editions remove the comma (see quot. ?1577 for old Adamish adj. at old Adam n. Derivatives), and the latter reading seems contextually the more likely:1569 A. Golding tr. N. Hemmingsen Postill f. 16v His new birth, which sanctifieth the old, Adamish and corrupt birth.
Now rare.
Of or resembling Adam; representative or typical of humanity as a whole; spec. = old Adamish adj. at old Adam n. Derivatives.
