Etymology: < Middle French punaise bug, bedbug (1256 in Old French; French punaise ), use as noun of feminine of punais (adjective) stinking, fetid (second half of the 12th cent. in Old French as pudneis ), apparently < an unattested post-classical Latin *putinasius stinking, literally ‘that smells in the nose’ < classical Latin pūtēre to stink (see putor n.) + nāsus nose (see nase n.) + -ius, suffix forming adjectives; compare post-classical Latin nariputens, in the same sense (6th cent. or earlier). Compare Old Occitan pugnaisa (1450).The β forms represent an inferred singular (compare cherry n., pea n.2, etc.).
