Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Italian punto; Italian punta.
Etymology: Apparently < Italian punto main point of an argument (see point n.1), with alteration of the final vowel after Italian feminine forms in -a , unless < Italian punta in similar use (recorded in senses ‘efficacy of an argument’, ‘importance of an argument’, ‘obvious meaning of a word’: see point n.1). Probably influenced in form by punctilio n. (compare sense 1 at that entry), punctum n. (compare sense 1c at that entry).
Obsolete. rare.
An important or main point or item; opposed to punctilio (see punctilio n. 1). Cf. point n.1 5a.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin puncta, punctum.
Etymology: < classical Latin puncta, plural of punctum (see point n.1), misinterpreted as feminine singular.In some early instances the form punctae is apparently used irregularly as a plural of punctum:1865 Trans. Amer. Philos. Soc. 13 223 The terminal scutum has several punctæ closely resembling pores. The preanal scale is triangular; it has two little elevations surmounted by a punctum.
