Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin punctatus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin punctatus speckled (11th cent.), embossed, pointed (13th cent. in British sources), (in geometry, of a curve) having an acnode (1704 in Newton: see note below) < classical Latin punctum (see point n.1) + -ātus -ate suffix2. Compare Italian puntato pointed (1427; now archaic), marked with points (1625). Compare earlier punctated adj.Quot. 1860 at sense 3 translates the following in Newton:1704 I. Newton Enumeratio Linearum 145 Punctatam quæ conjugatam habet Ovalem infinite parvam id est punctum.
