Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French purprision.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman purprision act or instance of enclosing or encroaching upon land or property illegally (14th cent. or earlier in a Scottish source; compare Old French (Normandy) porprisson in same sense (c1270), Middle French purprison enclosure (1367), and also Old French porprison attack (late 12th cent.)) < purpris purprise n. + -ion -ion suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin porprensio seizure, occupation (11th cent.), porprisia , porprisium , pourprisium , proprisia , proprisium , purprisium encroachment (from 12th cent. in British sources), enclosure (12th cent.). Compare purprise n. 2 and earlier purpresture n.The form perprisioune apparently shows prefix substitution (compare per- prefix). The β. forms show alteration after words in -ition suffix. The γ. forms either show prefix substitution (compare pro- prefix1) or are influenced by post-classical Latin proprisia, proprisium; the form propriitioun additionally shows alteration after words in -ition suffix.
