Etymology: < scientific Latin purpurascens somewhat purple, turning purple (frequently from 17th cent. in post-classical Latin in botanical and zoological use; from 1785 as a specific name (1789 in Coluber purpurascens ; compare quot. 1802)), use as adjective of classical Latin purpurascēns , present participle of purpurascere to become purple < purpurāre purpurate v. + -sc- (compare -ish suffix²). Compare later purpurescent adj.

Chiefly Botany.

Inclining to or tinged with purple; somewhat purple; turning purple. Cf. purpurescent adj.
