Origin: An imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Imitative of the dunlin's trilling call (compare churr n. 2). Compare pirr n.2, pirr maw n.It is unclear whether this is the same word as Old English pur (perhaps) the bittern ( Botaurus stellaris) or the common snipe ( Gallinago gallinago):OE Brussels Gloss. in T. Wright & R. P. Wülcker Anglo-Saxon & Old Eng. Vocab. (1884) I. 285 Onagratulus, raradumbla, þæt his pur.OE Antwerp Gloss. (1955) 67 Bicoca, hæferblæte, uel pur.The Old English word is also attested in place names, as Purlea (c1050; now Purleigh, Essex); Porbich (1086; now Purbeck, Dorset), Porlei (1086; now Purley, Berkshire), and perhaps also in Purwuda (a850; now Purr Wood, Kent); and in surnames, as Edricus Pur (1086), Walter Purr (1219), Roger Purfoghel (1296), etc.

Etymology: Origin unknown. Compare later perkin n.2, and perhaps earlier perry n.3
Obsolete.
A weak cider made by adding water to apple pulp from which the juice has already been pressed and then pressing it again; = ciderkin n., perkin n.2, water cider n. at water n. Compounds 7. Also: the pressed pulp from which this kind of drink is made.
