Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Pūniceus , -an suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin Pūniceus Carthaginian, Punic ( < Pūnicus Punic adj. + -eus : see -eous suffix) + -an suffix.With the use in quot. 1600 compare Middle French punicien designating a kind of falcon (1555 in faucon punicien ). In quot. 1866, fruit punicean translates classical Latin Pūniceum pomum pomegranate. With the form Punician compare -ian suffix. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (piuni·s-, -i·ʃiăn) /pjuːˈnɪs-, -ˈnɪʃiːən/.
Obsolete. rare.
= Punic adj.In quot. 1866 the fruit punicean is the pomegranate: cf. Punic apple n. at Punic n. and adj. Compounds.
