Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin pūniceus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin pūniceus bright red, scarlet, crimson ( < Pūnicus Punic adj. + -eus (see -eous suffix), partly after purpureus purple (see purpureous adj.), and partly after ancient Greek ϕοινίκεος : see phoeniceous adj.) + -ous suffix. Compare Spanish †puniceo (c1500), Italian puniceo (1499; now literary). Compare punicean adj.2
Now rare and historical.
Of a bright red, reddish-purple, or reddish-yellow colour or shade. Cf. phoeniceous adj.
