Forms: 1800s– puntilla, 1900s– puntillo (irregular).
Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish puntilla.
Etymology: Apparently < Spanish puntilla (although this is first attested slightly later in this sense: 1843; c1550 in sense ‘little point’) < punta (see point n.1) + -illa -illa suffix. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (punti·lya) /punˈtiʎa/.
