单词 puttony
释义

puttonyn.

Brit. /ˈpuːtɒn(jə)/, U.S. /ˈputɑn(jə)/
Inflections: Plural puttonyos, puttonos, puttonys, puttonyok.
Origin: A borrowing from Hungarian. Etymon: Hungarian puttony.
Etymology: < Hungarian puttony basket of wood or wickerwork, open at the top and becoming narrower and elongated towards the bottom, to be carried on the shoulder, now chiefly denoting a basket for gathering grapes < German regional (Austria, Bavaria) Butten , regional variant of Bütte basket (in southern Germany, Austria, and Switzerland also in unmutated form Butte ): see bit n.3The form puttonyos reflects the Hungarian adjective puttonyos ‘holding as much as goes into one puttony’ (in e.g. öt puttonyos tokaji aszú five-basket Tokay Aszú; < puttony + -os, suffix forming adjectives), rather than the Hungarian plural form (which is puttonyok, whence the occasional English plural puttonyok), but was reapprehended in English as a plural form, apparently due to its final -s. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (pu·tony) /ˈputoɲ/, which reflects the Hungarian pronunciation (in Hungarian, ny is the conventional spelling of the palatalized nasal /ɲ/).
In Hungary: a basket usually made of wooden staves or wickerwork and designed to be carried on the back, used to transfer grapes from the vineyard to the wine press. Hence: a measure of dried overripe grapes equivalent to the contents of such a container, added to the fermentation cask in making Tokay, the number of measures added determining the richness of the wine.
