单词 pur sang
释义

pur sangadj.n.adv.

Brit. /ˌpʊə ˈsɒŋ/, /ˌpʊə ˈsɑːŋ/, U.S. /ˌpʊr ˈsæŋ/, /ˌpʊr ˈsɑŋ/
Inflections: Plural pur sangs, purs sangs.
Forms: 1800s– pur sang, 1900s– pure sang.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pur sang.
Etymology: < French pur sang (noun) unmixed origin or descent (1835 in de pur sang , literally ‘of pure blood’; compare quot. 1848 at sense B.), pure-blooded or genuine person (1843), thoroughbred horse (1848), (adjective) pure-blooded (1837 with reference to a horse, 1839 with reference to a person) < pur pure adj. + sang blood (see sang royal n.).The use as adverb is apparently not paralleled in French. It has been suggested that the word order in the French compound may reflect that of pure-bred adj., but the latter is apparently first attested slightly later (and only several decades later in its corresponding use as noun). The French noun has the plural forms pur-sangs, purs-sangs, and (apparently most common) pur-sang (unchanged); the first two of these are reflected in the English plural forms. The form pure sang after pure adj.
