Beltway bandit n. slang (also with capital initial in the second element) any of a number of companies, typically located along the Beltway of Washington, D.C., that do a large percentage of their business securing government contracts for companies in the private sector; a federal government contractor.Originally with depreciative connotations of financial greed and self-serving opportunism, though now often used as a neutral descriptive term.In quot. 1967 referring to thieves who steal from houses and apartments alongside the Capital Beltway so as to be able to drive away quickly afterwards.
