Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek πυκνός , pycnidium n.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πυκνός thick, dense (see pycno- comb. form) + -ium (in e.g. pycnidium n.).
Mycology.
In rust fungi: a flask-shaped fruiting body producing haploid spores and receptive hyphae, which after fertilization results in the formation of an aecium; a spermogonium.
