Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pycnogonida.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Pycnogonida, class name (1839 or earlier) < Pycnogonum , genus name ( M. T. Brünnich Entomologia (1764) 84; < pycno- pycno- comb. form + ancient Greek γόνυ knee: see polygonate adj.1) + -ida (see -id suffix3). Compare scientific Latin Pycnogonides, former family name, French pycnogonides, plural noun (both P.-A. Latreille in Nouveau dict. d'hist. nat. (1803) XVIII. 583), German Pycnogoniden, plural (1843 or earlier).

Any of various marine chelicerate arthropods constituting the class Pycnogonida, characterized by very small bodies and long legs which contain extensions of the gut and gonads; a sea spider.
