Etymology: < scientific Latin Pycnogonida, class name (1839 or earlier) < Pycnogonum , genus name ( M. T. Brünnich Entomologia (1764) 84; < pycno- pycno- comb. form + ancient Greek γόνυ knee: see polygonate adj.¹) + -ida (see -id suffix³). Compare scientific Latin Pycnogonides, former family name, French pycnogonides, plural noun (both P.-A. Latreille in Nouveau dict. d'hist. nat. (1803) XVIII. 583), German Pycnogoniden, plural (1843 or earlier).
