Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: pygo- comb. form, -pod comb. form.
Etymology: < pygo- comb. form + -pod comb. form). In senses A. 2 and B. 2 after scientific Latin Pygopodidae, family name (1885 or earlier) < Pygopus, genus name ( J. B. von Spix Animalia nova sive species novæ lacertarum (1825) 25).

1. Ornithology. An aquatic bird having the legs placed far back on the body, such as a grebe or a diver. Obsolete. rare.

2. Zoology. Any of various lizards constituting the Australian family Pygopodidae, which are snake-like forms having no forelimbs and only rudimentary hindlimbs.
