Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Greek πύκνωσις , -otic suffix, pyknosis n.
Etymology: In sense 1 < ancient Greek πύκνωσις condensation, condensed matter (see pyknosis n.; see -otic suffix), after German pyknotisch (1899 in the passage translated in quot. 1900). In sense 2 < pyknosis n. (see -otic suffix). Compare Hellenistic Greek πυκνωτικός serving to close the pores, (of winds) bracing.
1. Designating a theory according to which the matter in the universe was formed by condensation of a universal substance or ether at particular points; of or relating to this theory. Now historical and rare.
