Etymology: < Anglo-Norman quatour tempre, quatre tempres, etc. and Middle French quatre temps, quatortempres (first half of the 13th cent. in Old French as quatuortempre ; French Quatre Temps , Quatre-Temps ) < classical Latin quattuor tempora the four seasons, in post-classical Latin also used figuratively in theological contexts (4th cent.; 9th cent. or earlier with reference to the liturgical year; from 10th cent. in British sources) < quattuor four (see quatuor n.) + tempora , plural of tempus time (see tempo n.¹); the French forms show either partial or total remodelling after quatre four (see quatre n.) and temps time (see temps n.).
