Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Partly a borrowing from Quechua. Etymons: Spanish quena; Quechua kena.
Etymology: < South American Spanish quena (1872) and its etymon Quechua kena < Aymara qina thing full of holes (16th cent. in quena quena pincollo), hence flute of cane.
Any of various types of Andean end-blown flute, typically made of wood or cane and having a notched mouthpiece, six finger holes, and a rear thumb hole.
