Etymology: Middle English beneysun, etc., < Old French beneiçun, -çon, -sson, son, -zon < Latin benedictiōn-em. Dr. Johnson says, ‘not now (1755) used, unless ludicrously.’ But it is now common as a poetic or quaint form of benediction.
