单词 quib
释义

quibn.

Brit. /kwɪb/, U.S. /kwɪb/
Forms: 1500s quibe, 1500s–1600s 1800s– quib, 1600s–1700s quibbe.
Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin quibus.
Etymology: Apparently < (originally in plural) classical Latin quibus, dative and ablative plural of quī who (see who pron.), as a word of frequent occurrence in legal documents and hence associated with the length and unnnecessary complexity of legal documents. In sense 2 probably influenced by association with quip n. Compare later quibble n.For other allusive uses of the Latin word, compare French quibus money, cash (c1462 in Middle French; now archaic), and Dutch kwibus fool (1662). Earlier currency of sense 2 is apparently implied by quib v.
1. An expression or point that serves to delay or obscure an argument; a quibble (quibble n. 2a). Obsolete.
