Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Pyrargyrit.

Etymology: < German Pyrargyrit ( E. F. Glocker Handb. der Mineralogie (1831) 388) < pyro- pyro- comb. form + ancient Greek ἄργυρος silver (see argyro- comb. form) + German -it -ite suffix¹, so called on account of its red colour and its composition.

Mineralogy.

A mineral which is a sulphide of silver and antimony, occurring in hydrothermal vein deposits chiefly as greyish-black prisms or masses, though small pieces show a deep red colour by transmitted light.Pyrargyrite is the antimony analogue of proustite and is dimorphous with pyrostilpnite. Formula: Ag₃SbS₃. Crystal system: trigonal.
