Etymology: < scientific Latin Pyrenomycetes ( E. M. Fries Systema Mycologicum (1821) I. p. xxxi) < ancient Greek πυρήν fruit stone (see pyrene n.¹) + post-classical Latin -o- -o- connective + Mycetes mycetes n.² Compare French pyrénomycètes (dated 1842 in Robert Dict. alphabétique et analogique (1986)), German Pyrenomyceten (1860 or earlier).

Mycology.

With singular agreement: a former class of fungi (now called Sordariomycetes), constituting a subgroup of the Ascomycota characterized by having the asci enclosed in flask-shaped fruiting bodies (perithecia).
