Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French quatuor.
Etymology: < French quatuor piece composed for four voices or parts (1705), set of four singers or players who perform together (1842) < classical Latin quattuor four (also as quatuor , which becomes the usual form in post-classical Latin) < the same Indo-European base as four adj.Not fully naturalized in English. In French a more general term than quartette (see quartet n.), which chiefly denotes singers or players of jazz or popular (rather than classical) music.
Music. Now rare.
