Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish quebracho.
Etymology: < American Spanish quebracho (a1745), also quebracha , quiebrahacha , quiebrahacho red quebracho < quebrar to break (see quebrada n.) + hacha axe (see hache n.), so called on account of the hardness of its wood.With sense 2 compare American Spanish quebracho blanco (1896 or earlier).
1. More fully red quebracho. Any of several South American trees of the genus Schinopsis (family Anacardiaceae), esp. S. lorentzii, with hard, tannin-rich wood and bark which are both used in tanning. Also: the wood or bark of this tree.
