Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek πῦρ, ὀλετήρ.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πῦρ fire (see pyro- comb. form) + ὀλετήρ destroyer ( < the stem of ὄλλυναι to slay (see abolish v.) + -τήρ, suffix forming agent nouns).The device was invented by ‘Dr. Paton’ and ‘Mr. Harris’ ( Illustr. London News (12 June 1875) 569/1), probably J. Paton and P. Harris or R. Harris, who already held a patent for a fire-extinguishing gas from 1870. With the form pyroletor compare -or suffix. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (pəirǫ·lĭtəɹ) /paɪˈrɒlɪtə(r)/.
Obsolete.
A kind of fire extinguisher, used esp. on ships, in which solutions of hydrochloric acid and sodium bicarbonate are mixed in a cylinder and react to produce carbon dioxide, which is pumped over the fire.

1878 Ure's Dict. IV. 712 The pyroleter is a small double pump worked by hand, which sucks up from tubes on either side muriatic acid and a solution of carbonate of soda.
