Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: pyro- comb. form, Greek λοῦσις , -ite suffix¹.

Etymology: < pyro- comb. form + Byzantine Greek λοῦσις action or practice of washing ( < ancient Greek λούειν lave v.¹ + -σις -sis suffix) + -ite suffix¹, from its use, when heated, for discharging colour from glass.Named by W. Haidinger in a lecture delivered in 1827 but not published until four years later (see quot. 1831).

Mineralogy.

A common manganese ore consisting of manganese dioxide, which occurs as black or dark grey crystals with a metallic lustre and is formed chiefly by deposition from water or by alteration of other manganese-containing minerals.Formula : MnO₂; dimorphous with ramsdellite. Crystal system: tetragonal.
