Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: pyro- comb. form, Greek λοῦσις , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < pyro- comb. form + Byzantine Greek λοῦσις action or practice of washing ( < ancient Greek λούειν lave v.1 + -σις -sis suffix) + -ite suffix1, from its use, when heated, for discharging colour from glass.Named by W. Haidinger in a lecture delivered in 1827 but not published until four years later (see quot. 1831).
Mineralogy.
A common manganese ore consisting of manganese dioxide, which occurs as black or dark grey crystals with a metallic lustre and is formed chiefly by deposition from water or by alteration of other manganese-containing minerals.Formula : MnO2; dimorphous with ramsdellite. Crystal system: tetragonal.

1831 W. Haidinger in Trans. Royal Soc. Edinb. 11 136 The name of Pyrolusite alludes to a property for which this mineral is reckoned the most valuable,..being employed, in consequence of the large quantity of oxygen it emits at a red heat, to free glass from..brown and green tints.
1839 H. T. De la Beche Rep. Geol. Cornwall xv. 610 Pyrolusite, or grey and black ore, containing from 70 to 99 per cent. of peroxide of manganese.
1912 J. W. Mellor Mod. Inorg. Chem. xxv. 483 A crude mixture of sodium manganate and permanganate is made by fusing sodium hydroxide with pyrolusite, and sold as a disinfectant under the name ‘Condy's fluid’.
1984 N. N. Greenwood & A. Earnshaw Chem. of Elements (1986) xxiv. 1211 Millions of tonnes of manganese are used annually, and its most common mineral, pyrolusite, has been used in glassmaking since the time of the Pharaohs.
1997 R. V. Gaines et al. Dana's Syst. Mineral. (ed. 8) iv. 239 Pyrolusite is also deposited as nodules on the deep-sea floor, probably related to bacterial action and/or spreading centers between plates.
