Etymology: < Middle French pyromance, piromance, pyromancie, pyromantie (c1200 in Old French as piromancie ; French pyromancie , (rare) pyromantie ) and its etymon post-classical Latin pyromantia (a636 in Isidore; from 12th cent. in British sources) < Hellenistic Greek πυρομαντεία (in a papyrus: the reading is doubtful) < ancient Greek πυρο- pyro- comb. form + -μαντεία -mancy comb. form.
Now chiefly historical.
