Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: pyromucous adj., -ic suffix, pyro- comb. form, mucic adj.
Etymology: In sense 1 < pyromuc- (in pyromucous adj. + -ic suffix), after French pyromucique, designating radicals corresponding to pyromucous acid ( L.-B. Guyton de Morveau et al. Méthode de nomencl. chim. (1787) 81). In sense 2 < pyro- comb. form + mucic adj., after French acide pyro-mucique (J. J. de Houtou-Labillardière 1818, in Ann. de chim. et de physique 9 366).
Chemistry. Now rare.
1. Originally: †relating to pyromucous acid obsolete (see pyromucous adj.). In later use: relating to or derived from pyromucic acid.
