Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: pyrotechny n., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < pyrotechny n. + -ist suffix. Compare post-classical Latin pyrotechnicus pyrotechnist (see pyrotechnic adj. and n.).
1. Originally: †a person skilled in the use of fire in chemistry, metallurgy, etc.; a chemist (obsolete). In later use: a person employed or skilled in the use of gunpowder, explosives, or (esp.) fireworks; a pyrotechnician.
