Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin pyroticus, pyroticum.
Etymology: As adjective < post-classical Latin pyroticus heating (c400 or earlier) < Hellenistic Greek πυρωτικός < ancient Greek πυρωτός fiery ( < πυροῦν to burn (see pyrosis n.) + -τός , suffix forming verbal adjectives) + -ικός -ic suffix. As noun < post-classical Latin pyroticum (1582 in the passage translated in quot. 1634 at sense B.), use as noun of neuter of pyroticus , adjective. Compare Middle French pyrotique , adjective and noun (1590 in Paré in the passages translated in quots. 1634 at sense A. and 1634 at sense B.).
