1848 Chem. Gaz. 6 361 Pyroxanthine..is first produced by the action of alkalies and alkaline earths upon the empyreumatic oil, or rather one of its constituents (pyroxanthogen).

1860 H. Watts tr. L. Gmelin Hand-bk. Chem. XIV. 165 A yellowish oil, which may be extracted from the solution by ether, resembles pyroxanthogen, but no longer yields pyroxanthin with potash.
