单词 pyroxene
释义

pyroxenen.

Brit. /pʌɪˈrɒksiːn/, U.S. /paɪˈrɑkˌsin/, /pəˈrɑkˌsin/
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pyroxène.
Etymology: < French pyroxène ( R. J. Haüy 1796, in Jrnl. des mines 5 269) < pyro- pyro- comb. form + ancient Greek ξένος stranger (see xeno- comb. form), so called because Haüy mistakenly considered the crystals to be accidental inclusions in volcanic glass or lava.
Mineralogy.
Originally: any of a large group of silicate minerals containing calcium and one or more other bases, usually magnesium and iron; spec. augite. In later use: any of a group of silicate minerals (inosilicates) characterized by a structure of single chains of SiO4 tetrahedra and prismatic cleavage at nearly 90 degrees, the general formula of which is approximately XY(ZO3)2, where X and Y are bases and Z is aluminium or silicon. The pyroxene group contains around twenty mineral species, including aegirine, augite, diopside, enstatite, ferrosilite, jadeite, and spodumene. Crystal system: orthorhombic (orthopyroxenes) or monoclinic (clinopyroxenes). Cf. pyroxenoid n.
