1. The position of ships in a column when each successive vessel has its bows abaft the beam of the one in front, and a little to one side. Also more fully bow and quarter line. Cf. bowline n.1 3, quarter n. 24a.

1891 Cent. Dict. 4898/2 Quarter-line,..an additional line extending to the under side of the bag of a seine. As the bag approaches the shore, this line is from time to time drawn upon to relieve the strain upon the wings.
