Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: proper name Pyrrhōn- , Pyrrhō , -ism suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin Pyrrhōn-, Pyrrhō (see Pyrrhonian n.) + -ism suffix, after Middle French, French pyrrhonisme (1580 in Montaigne). Compare slightly earlier Pyrrhonist n., and also pyrrhonize v.
Chiefly Philosophy.
A system of sceptical philosophy originally expounded by Pyrrho of Elis; the doctrine of the impossibility of attaining certainty of knowledge; absolute or universal scepticism. Hence more generally: scepticism, philosophic doubt.
